Unbeaten Penns Manor keeps hold on first place in Heritage West with 52-37 victory over Marion Center

KENWOOD — Two undefeated teams walked into Penns Manor’s gym on Wednesday night, and one held steady when it mattered.
By halftime, Penns Manor turned what began as a tight Heritage Conference West showdown into a runaway, and by the final buzzer, the Comets stamped their seventh straight win with a 53-37 victory over Marion Center.
The matchup carried early-season intrigue: Penns Manor (7-0) entered unbeaten after six games, having steamrolled its four conference opponents by nearly 40 points per game, and registered non-conference wins against a pair of tough Class 4A schools.
Marion Center (4-1) also arrived without a loss, having knocked off its first four conference opponents.
For a quarter, the Stingers hung around. By the second frame, the cracks started to show.
The turning point came when Marion Center standout junior Macie Miller picked up her third foul just 3:06 into the second quarter. Already saddled with two quick whistles in the opening minutes — a hand-check 20 feet from the basket and a charge drawn by Penns Manor junior Clara Henry — Miller was forced to the bench again.
Her absence was felt immediately. Freshman Adia Lieb attacked the lane for back-to-back baskets, and sophomore Josslyn Bennett joined in with a flurry of points.

What had been a manageable deficit ballooned into a steep climb. The Comets closed the half on a 16–2 run, scoring the final 12 points in 96 seconds to seize a commanding 33–11 lead.
Marion Center coach Amy Trimble didn’t mince words afterward.
“Honestly, we let down a little bit on ourselves,” she said. “We know we are better than that. It’s mental, it’s life — you’re going to have some mental breaks now and then. That’s what it was. But I told them at the end we still fought back. It was a good second half. You just can’t have those mental breaks — all the time.”
While Miller’s foul trouble set the stage, Penns Manor’s defense made sure she never found a rhythm.
Coach Jason Miloser praised his team’s execution.
“We knew coming in that Macie Miller is a great player, and our focus was trying to limit her the best we could,” he said. “At different times, Syd (Luther), Jill (Kuzemchak), Josie (Matko) and Adia were guarding her. Sometimes we sent double teams at her and different looks. I couldn’t be prouder of the girls because I thought they executed well defensively.”
The Comets’ pressure forced Marion Center into rushed possessions and long stretches without scoring.
Offensively, Penns Manor shared the ball, piling up assists and spreading the scoring load.
Lieb left her mark all over the floor and played far beyond her freshman label. She finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals, impacting nearly every possession. Even after she was charged with a third foul early in the third quarter, she stayed aggressive — diving for loose balls, finding teammates and crashing the glass.
“She started out as just a good athlete,” Miloser said, “but now we’re starting to see her develop into an excellent basketball player and leader. She does so many of the little things. Defensively, she’s everywhere. Sometimes kids have things that you can’t teach, and she has a good instinct and knack for the ball.”
Bennett added 13 points, while Henry and Katie Bertolino chipped in with timely plays. Bertolino grabbed eight rebounds and drew a charge that triggered the second-quarter swing.
Marion Center, despite the lopsided halftime score, showed resilience in the second half. Miller returned to score 13 points, sharing team-high honors with Averi Ruddock. Together, they accounted for 14 of Marion Center’s 18 fourth-quarter points.
Trimble emphasized the positives.
“It’s a learning curve,” she said. “Number one, do not give up. And that showed tonight. That was positive keeping that mentality. I really liked that. Just the work ethic overall was better in the second half than in the first.”
Miller briefly cut the deficit to 15 with a 3-pointer midway through the fourth, but Penns Manor answered. Lieb assisted Bennett on a putback, then crossed over her defender for an easy layup. Even after switching jerseys late due to blood on her uniform, Lieb capped the night with the final point.
For Penns Manor, the win reinforced its place atop the conference standings. Miloser stressed how valuable it was for his young group to show they could withstand the pressure in a division stacked with quality opponents.
“It was exciting to come out and see us play well from that opening tip,” he said. “As a young team, we’re starting to develop leadership. We don’t have any seniors, but our upperclassmen are stepping up. We can enjoy this one for about 30 minutes, then get back to work because we have a really good Purchase Line team coming in on Friday.”
For Marion Center, the loss was a reminder of how quickly momentum can shift when a key player is sidelined. Trimble acknowledged Miller’s foul trouble was a factor, but stressed that the team can’t afford to let down when one player is missing.
“Just because she wasn’t in there, we can’t be submissive,” she said. “We still have a role to play, and we have to step up collectively and take over.”
The schedule doesn’t slow down. On Friday, Penns Manor welcomes Purchase Line while Marion Center travels to West Shamokin — both border battles in the West Division.
